Explore Kansas City Food Scene Changes: New Eateries and Closures in June 2025

Charming vintage bar in Kansas City food scene, June 2025.

New Dining Hotspots Transform Kansas City

This June, Kansas City food enthusiasts are in for a delightful treat as new culinary ventures take shape. Todd Schulte and Cory Dannehl, known for their popular eateries, are expanding beyond their successful Earl's Premier and Bacaro Primo to introduce two exciting new establishments. At the forefront is Earl's Provisions, which opens in the first week of June in a cozy 2,000-square-foot space right next to Earl's. This market aims to bring some of the best sellers from their restaurants, like soups and crab cakes, right to customers’ tables.

Coastal Flavors at Sea Capitán Cocina Costera

But that's just the beginning! Schulte and Dannehl are also preparing to unveil Sea Capitán Cocina Costera, a sprawling 5,000-square-foot restaurant set in the former Blu Hwy space. This is the duo's most ambitious project to date, signaling their commitment to innovative dining experiences. Drawing inspiration from coastal Mexican cuisine, the menu will feature a refreshing selection of ceviches, aguachiles, and an array of seafood as well as other enticing options. Schulte promises, "It’ll be a lighter, fresher take than most offerings here in town."

Patrons can also expect a vibrant bar program centered on tequila and mezcal, with a unique twist; the restaurant will feature tequila lockers, allowing guests to personalize their experience with their favorite spirits. This dual approach of market shopping and casual dining reflects a growing trend in which convenience meets culinary ambition.

Saying Goodbye to Beloved Chingu

However, not all news is sweet in the Kansas City culinary scene. In a heartfelt message, Keeyoung Kim, the chef-owner of the beloved Korean restaurant Chingu, announced its closure due to personal health reasons and to focus on his growing family. This news has stirred considerable emotions among loyal patrons, reflecting the deeply embedded sense of community around local eateries. Chingu, which opened in 2022, was a haven for authentic Korean cuisine, and its loss is felt by many.

Adapting to Change: A Community Perspective

Kansas City’s dining landscape is clearly evolving, balancing exciting openings with bittersweet goodbyes. As beloved establishments close, the community must rally around new ventures that promise to elevate the local food scene. Supporting these newcomers not only ensures the vibrancy of Kansas City’s dining culture but also fosters a spirit of resilience in the face of change.

Celebrate Local Dining!

As new market shelves fill and fresh ingredients grace the plates of Sea Capitán and Earl’s Provisions, residents are encouraged to explore these culinary experiences with open arms. Supporting local restaurants not only enriches our palates but strengthens our community ties. Head over to Earl's Provisions for a taste of familiar favorites, or make a reservation at Sea Capitán to savor an exciting coastal twist!

What new flavors will you discover this June? Dive into the changes and celebrate the growth of our culinary community. Together, let’s turn every meal into a moment worth sharing!

Discover the Transformative Artistry of Andrew Gilliatt in KC

Update Rediscovering Art Through Community Ceramicist Andrew Gilliatt reflects warmly on his time in Kansas City, which he describes as a pivotal chapter in his artistic journey. During his four and a half years in the colorful backdrop of the Crossroads Arts District, he not only honed his skills but also built vital connections with fellow creatives. "Call it kismet, fortune, or perhaps a dose of serendipity, but those years molded me both as an artist and as a person," Gilliatt recalls with a hint of nostalgia. A Journey from Kansas City to Bowling Green Having begun his journey at the renowned Red Star Studios—now part of Belger Crane Yard Studios—Gilliatt found himself engulfed in a thriving community. The city provided him with endless inspiration as he learned not just from teachers but also from his peers. Today, though he resides in Bowling Green, Ohio, Gilliatt still brings a piece of Kansas City to his current work—showcasing his ceramics at local venues, including the Belger Arts Center in Kansas City. Art that Tells Stories Gilliatt’s creations act as a reflective journal—a compilation of influences that stitch together elements from the past with modern sensibility. His pink round vase, perfect for seasonal florals, serves as an homage to the revered pottery of ancient China’s Han Dynasty. "I’m fascinated by the notion of infusing old techniques with new expression," he shares, pointing to art as a fundamental bridge connecting generations. Bringing Nature to Life One feature that stands out in Gilliatt’s work is his use of nature-inspired, art nouveau decorative techniques. This alignment with art’s historic roots echoes a broader trend in the ceramics community where artists are exploring vintage aesthetics through a contemporary lens. By doing so, Gilliatt not only revives old traditions but also reinterprets them for a modern audience. Engage with Gilliatt's Work Those interested in bringing a touch of Gilliatt’s artistry into their homes can find his work available for purchase at the Belger Arts Center, located at 2100 Walnut St., KCMO. Fans can also see his latest creations and inspirations on Instagram under the handle @andrewgilliat. In today’s bustling arts scene, it’s crucial to support our local artists who keep our culture alive—and Gilliatt is a shining example. So, if you're in Kansas City or just passing through, take a moment to explore the vibrant world of ceramics at the Belger Arts Center and see for yourself how artists like Gilliatt blend the legacy of the past with the promise of the future.
